Speech Pathology

First Step: Assessment

Our journey begins with a comprehensive intake assessment, where our caring speech pathologist takes the time to listen, ask questions, and evaluate various aspects of communication.

This includes speech sounds, how the client expresses themselves, how well the client understands others, and even social interactions. We also consider information from other members of the client’s healthcare team.

This assessment serves as the starting point for our personalized plan to help our clients communicate better.

The Next Step

Our intake clinician will provide a report, outlining the results of the assessment and the recommendations for the client.

This may include therapy sessions, further assessments, internal referral to DWSP programs or external referrals to other healthcare providers. If appropriate, our intake clinicians will place the client on our waitlist for services. When an appointment time with a suitable clinician becomes available, our lovely reception team will set up an appointment.

Set goals:

Together, we set clear and achievable therapy goals. These goals are all about the individual person and their unique needs and dreams. Whether it’s speaking more clearly, expressing themselves better, or speaking more smoothly, we’re here to support our clients’ aspirations.

Create a personalized therapy plan:

Our dedicated team creates customized therapy plans filled with exercises and activities that are not only effective but also enjoyable. These plans are like roadmaps guiding our clients toward their communication goals, and they may include:

Talking Practice: We’ll work together on exercises that make it easier for our clients to say words and sentences clearly and confidently. It’s a bit like practising a favourite sport or game to get better.
Speech Exercises: Our sessions feature engaging speech exercises designed to improve pronunciation and fluency. Whether it’s working on specific sounds or tackling stuttering, these exercises boost confidence and make communication smoother.
Language Activities: For our young friends, we make learning words, sentences, and stories fun and accessible. We’re here to help if clients find it tricky to understand or use language correctly, whether it’s forming sentences or understanding what others say.
Voice Therapy: When your voice needs a little TLC, our voice therapy exercises gently improve its quality, making it clearer and more comfortable. This is especially valuable for singers, teachers, and anyone who relies on their voice for their work.
Fluency Therapy: If someone is dealing with stuttering or interruptions in your speech, our therapy techniques are all about making the words flow more smoothly and confidently.
AAC Training: For those who find it challenging to speak or can’t speak at all, we offer expert training in using tools like communication boards or devices, empowering you to express yourself effectively.
Swallowing Therapy (Dysphagia): Our approach to swallowing difficulties focuses on enhancing the swallowing function, ensuring safe and enjoyable mealtimes.
Social Communication Skills: We specialise in nurturing social communication skills, especially in children with autism spectrum disorders or social communication disorders. We help families and educators understand nonverbal cues and build strong interactive skills.
Prevention and Education: We’re here to collaborate with kindergartens, daycares, and schools, helping teachers and educators support children’s unique communication needs.
Rehabilitation: If a client has had injuries, surgeries, or medical conditions that affect communication or swallowing, we’re here to assist, in regaining these vital skills.

Practice at Home

Just like practising a musical instrument between lessons, practising at home speeds up the progress. We provide exercises for you /your child to practice at home, making sure you get results even faster.

We’ll Check Progress

We’re always keeping an eye on how our clients are doing, and we adjust our plan as needed to ensure that you’re making steady progress.
