Occupation Therapy

Occupational Therapy: Empowering Your Life’s Journey

Ever wondered who helps people conquer life’s challenges, from tying shoelaces to finding confidence in social settings? Meet Occupational Therapists (OTs) – the everyday heroes behind Occupational Therapy (OT).

Occupational therapists are like compassionate life coaches. They dive deep into your world, understand your unique struggles, and craft tailored plans to make everyday activities not just manageable but enjoyable. Whether it’s mastering handwriting, overcoming stress, or enhancing social skills, they’re your partners in progress.

What can OT help with?

Physical Abilities: OTs assess fine and gross motor skills, strength, endurance, balance, coordination, and range of motion. They observe how a person moves, manipulates objects, and performs various physical tasks. They may help kids grip pencils, tie shoelaces, and improve hand-eye coordination. For adults, it might mean refining dexterity for precise tasks like cooking or crafting.
Sensory Processing: OTs evaluate how an individual processes sensory information, including touch, sound, sight, taste, and smell. They assess sensory sensitivities, seeking to understand how sensory input affects behaviour and daily functioning.
Cognitive Abilities: OTs evaluate cognitive functions such as attention, memory, problem-solving, and executive functioning skills. They assess how well a person can plan, organise, initiate tasks, and switch between activities.
Social and Emotional Skills: OTs assess social interaction abilities, emotional regulation, communication skills, and the ability to engage in social activities. They observe how a person interacts with others and assess their ability to interpret social cues. They provide strategies to manage stress, anxiety, and sensory sensitivities, fostering emotional resilience and mental well-being.
Life After Injury or Surgery: OTs guide recovery after injuries or surgeries, helping you regain independence in tasks like dressing, bathing, and cooking. List item
Home and Environmental Assessment: OTs can assess your home or workplace and provide suggestions to make it work better for you. They look for potential safety hazards, assess the need for home or workplace modifications or adaptive equipment, and recommend changes to enhance accessibility and independence.  Need a ramp for easier access? Or a chair that offers better support? They ensure your environment isn’t just accessible, but also comfortable and accommodating.
Social Skills and Communication:OTs help people learn how to socialise better. They teach you how to talk and connect with others in a meaningful way, making it easier to build relationships. For those with speech challenges, they offer techniques to communicate effectively.
School or Work Assessments: For children, OTs assess school-related activities such as handwriting, attention, participation in classroom tasks, and social interactions. For adults, they assess work-related tasks and ergonomic factors, ensuring a person can perform job duties effectively and comfortably.
Child Development: In paediatric OT, they focus on vital childhood skills like crawling, walking, playing, and socialising, setting strong foundations for a bright future.OTs consider the client’s and their family’s perspectives, concerns, and goals. They collaborate with the client and their support network to understand their specific challenges and aspirations.

What is the process?

We start with an intake assessment, where a senior Occupational Therapist will listen, ask questions, and evaluate various aspects of daily life, based on your concerns. We also consider information from other members of the client’s healthcare team. This assessment serves as the starting point for our personalised plan to help our clients with their challenges.

From here, our intake clinician will provide a report, outlining the results of the assessment and the recommendations for the client. This may include therapy sessions, further assessments, internal referral to DWSP programs or external referrals to other healthcare providers. If appropriate, our intake clinicians will place the client onto our wait list for services. When an appointment time with a suitable clinician becomes available, our lovely reception team will set up an appointment.

What will my clinician do with me /my child?

  1. Set goals: Together, we set clear and achievable therapy goals. These goals are all about the individual person and their unique needs and dreams. Whether it’s a child learning to tie their shoes or an adult recovering after surgery, our OTs are here to make life’s challenges a little easier and help you achieve your goals.
  2. Create a personalised therapy plan: Our dedicated team creates customised therapy plans filled with exercises and activities that are not only effective but also enjoyable.
  3. Provide at-home exercises: Practice makes perfect! Our OT’s can provide exercises and strategies to work on at home or school in between sessions, to help reach therapy goals faster.
  4. We’ll Check Progress: We’re always keeping an eye on how our clients are doing, and we adjust our plan as needed to ensure that you’re making steady progress.
  5. Teamwork: We love working together with doctors, teachers, other clinicians and your family to provide you with the best care and support.
